Massage Therapist or Physiotherapist? Who should I choose?

Remedial massage vs physiotherapy

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in healing and rehabilitation after an injury, surgery, or chronic pain. The choice between a massage therapist and a physiotherapist can be a difficult one, as both professions might offer similar services. However, there are key differences that you need to understand before making a decision.

What is a Massage Therapist?

A massage therapist is a trained professional who specialises in manual techniques such as massages, Swedish massages, deep tissue massages, and others to treat pain and muscle tension. They typically work in spas, wellness centres, or private practice. Massage therapists may also offer additional services such as hot stone therapy, aromatherapy, and reflexology.

What is a Physiotherapist?

A physiotherapist, also known as a physical therapist, is a allied health professional who is trained to diagnose and treat physical conditions related to injury, illness, or disability. Physiotherapists use manual therapy, exercise therapy, and other treatments to improve mobility, relieve pain, and promote overall health. They typically work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and private practice.

Massage Therapist or Physiotherapist? Who should I choose?

The decision between a massage therapist and a physiotherapist should be based on your specific needs and goals. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Injury or Pain: If you have sustained an injury or are experiencing chronic pain, a physiotherapist may be the best choice for you. Physiotherapists are trained to diagnose and treat physical conditions related to injury, illness, or disability. They will create a personalized treatment plan to help you recover and prevent future injury.
  • Stress Relief: If you’re looking for a way to relax and relieve stress, a massage therapist may be the best choice for you. Massage therapists use manual techniques to relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation.
  • Insurance Coverage: Physiotherapy is typically covered by private health insurance. In Australia fully qualified remedial massage therapists are also covered by private health insurance. Check with your insurance provider to see what is covered before making a decision.
  • Time and Budget: Physiotherapy sessions can be more time-consuming and expensive compared to massage therapy sessions. If you have limited time or budget, a massage therapist may be a better option for you.

My partner got me a voucher for my birthday last year, when I finally got around to using it I couldn't believe it had taken so long. My massage at Magda clinic was easily top 3 of my life, I found immediate and lasting relief from pain which had plagued me for weeks. Magda was friendly yet professional and it was absolutely fantastic service. I would go back in a heart beat. 10/10

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I was on holidays and had a very sore back, so I booked in for a massage with Magna. I normally have fortnightly massages at home, so I’m quite particular about the pressure and technique I like — and Magna was fantastic! She has very strong hands, exactly what I needed, while still making the whole experience incredibly relaxing. I walked out feeling so much better and really enjoyed the massage. I would definitely recommend Magna to anyone looking for a great massage. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in the area! 💆‍♀️✨

Magda was highly knowledgeable and skilled. She made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked through the door and throughout the entire massage. She discussed ways to get the most out of the massage and the recovery process, as well as highlighting factors that were contributing to my pain. I look forward to my next massage!
