As a trained remedial massage therapist here in Townsville, I know exactly how important it is to feel safe, supported, and relaxed during pregnancy. At Magda Clinic, I work with many expectant mums who are unsure whether massage is okay during pregnancy, especially during the early weeks.
Let me walk you through how pregnancy massage works, trimester by trimester, so you can understand what’s safe, what’s not, and when it’s best to come in.
First Trimester (Weeks 1–12): Holding Off for Safety
In the first trimester, your body is going through a whirlwind of changes – hormonal shifts, fatigue, nausea, and emotional ups and downs. As a remedial massage therapist, I always take a cautious approach during this stage.
At Magda Clinic, I do not recommend massage during the first trimester. This isn’t because massage causes harm, but because this stage of pregnancy is the most sensitive. Most miscarriages, if they occur, happen in these early weeks, and while massage doesn’t cause them, I believe it’s best to wait until things have settled a bit.
Instead of a massage, I often suggest other gentle ways to support your body and mind during these weeks, like warm (not hot) baths, light stretching, and plenty of rest. Once you’re safely into the second trimester, we can begin working together in a safe and nurturing way to support your pregnancy.
Your safety and peace of mind always come first. That’s why I prefer to hold off until at least week 13 before beginning any pregnancy massage sessions.
Second Trimester (Weeks 13–27): Relief & Reconnection
This is the trimester when most women start to enjoy pregnancy, and that’s when I see the most bookings for pregnancy massage. You’re likely past the morning sickness, and your bump is starting to show. With that comes the not-so-fun stuff: backaches, tight hips, and swelling in the legs.
This is where remedial massage begins to play a more significant role. I focus on easing muscle tension, especially in the lower back and glutes, which are under a lot of pressure now. I also use safe positioning, with pillows and side-lying support, so you’re totally comfortable throughout the session.
In this trimester, pregnancy massage isn’t just safe – it’s incredibly helpful. You’ll walk out feeling lighter, more balanced, and better connected with your changing body.
Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40): Support to the Finish Line
The home stretch! At this stage, most of my clients are coming in weekly or fortnightly. Your body is carrying more weight, your posture has shifted, and sleeping might be getting harder. The aches and pains become more noticeable, and massage becomes a must-have.
I use remedial massage techniques to ease swelling in the feet and ankles, soothe lower back pain, and even support better sleep.
One thing I always make sure of at this stage is your comfort. Side-lying is still the best position, and I use plenty of cushions to support your bump and legs. Sometimes, just lying down and being touched with care makes a world of difference.
